Sarah Emma Edmonds (1841 - 1898), a Canadian-born woman who is known for serving with the Union Army during the American Civil War as both a nurse and a spy (first disguised as a man, "Frank Thompson". Her account of various Civil War exploits was published in 1865 "Nurse and Spy in the Union Army". She is shown here "disguised as a contraband" (black slave from rebel territory) man working on rebel fortifications at Yorktown Virginia.
